Terminology

Punches   (Zuki) 

                                     Choku Zuki              -       Straight punch.

                                      Oi Zuki                    -       Walking forward towards opponent to punch.

                                     Gyaku Zuki             -        Reverse punch. i.e: Left leg forward - right arm punching.

                                     Uraken Zuki            -         Back fist punch.

                                  Sekkyaku Zuki           -         Lunge Punch.

                                   Mawashi Zuki            -         Roundhouse Punch.  

                                      Furi Zuki                  -        Uppercut punch. (Delivered at 45')

                               Hiraken Fore Zuki         -         Fore-Knuckle fist.

                                    Kizami Zuki               -         Jab punch.

                                   Maekan Zuki             -         Leading hand punch.  

                                     Yama Zuki                -         U punch. Simultaneous punch to head & body.

                                    Ippon Ken                  -        One knuckle punch.  

                                     Tate Zuki                  -         Vertical Fist Punch.

Strikes (Uchi)

                              Shuto Uchi                   -              Knife hand strike. Using small finger edge of hand.

                           Shuto Soto Uchi              -              Knife hand strike. Striking from the outside of body to inside.

                              Teisho Uchi                  -             Palm heel strike.

                          Tettsui Uchi (Yoko)         -             Bottom fist strike. (Usually striking to the side).

                               Haisho Uchi                -             Back hand strike.

                                Haito Uchi                 -              Ridge hand strike.  

                                  Nukite                     -              Spear hand strike.

                                Empi Uchi                  -              Elbow strike.

                               Otoshi Uchi                 -              Dropping strike (e.g: bottom fist to top of head).

Kicks   (Geri)  

                               Mae Geri                  -               Front kick (kicking with ball of foot - toes bent up).

                           Mae Ashi Geri             -               Front kick front leg.

                          (Mae) Kin Geri             -              (Front) Groin kick (kicking with instep - toes straight).

                            Mawashi Geri             -               Roundhouse kick (kicking with instep).

                              Ushiro Geri                -              Back kick (kicking with heel).

                               Yoko Geri                 -              Side kick (kicking with edge of foot).

                               Tobi Geri                  -              Jumping kick.

                               Hiza Geri                  -              Knee kick.

                          Mikazuki Geri               -             Crescent kick.

                     Ushiro Mawashi Geri         -             Spinning roundhouse back kick (kicking with the heel).

                Mawa Geri (Ura Mawashi)     -             Reverse roundhouse kick.

                             Fumikomi                    -             Stamping kick (kicking down with heel).

  Blocks   (Uke)

                      Gedan Barai                 -              Downward sweeping block with small finger edge of forearm.

                       Shuto Uke                   -               Knife hand block.

                        Uchi Uke                    -               Forearm block, blocking from the inside of body to outside.  

                        Soto Uke                    -               Forearm block, blocking from the outside of body to inside.

              Gedan Shuto Uchi Uke       -               Downward knife hand block against attack to the lower body.

               Jodan Shuto Soto Uke       -               Knife hand block against attack to the head.

                         Age Uke                    -              Upward rising block.  

                         Juji Uke                     -              Cross arm block.

                        Kote Uke                    -              Forearm block (with hand above hip).

                     Tenohira Uke                -              Palm hand blocking up with other hand protecting head.

                      Teisho Uke                   -              Palm heel block.

                      Haisho Uke                   -              Backhand block.  

                      Tassau Uke                   -              Inner forearm downward block.

                     Tsukami Uke                  -             Grasping block.

                        Sukui Uke                    -             Scooping block.

                        Sasau Uke                    -             Double handed block.

                        Kake uke                      -             Hooking block.

                      Morote Uke                    -            Block with hand supporting.

Stances   (Dachi)  

                    Heisuko Dachi                 -             Preliminary  stance - feet together toes pointing forward.

                     Musubi Dachi                 -           Heels together toes pointing out 45'.

                      Heiko Dachi                   -             Move heels out from Musubi Dachi toes pointing forward.

                      Shizen Dachi                  -              Leave heels as Heiko Dachi and point toes out 45'.  

              Yoi (Shizen Dachi Heiko)      -             Ready stance-feet shoulder width apart toes point forward.

                  Naihanchi Dachi                -             Leave heels in position as Yoi and point toes out at 45'

                      Hachiji Dachi                 -             Natural open leg stance.

                   Zenkutsu Dachi                -              Forward stance. (Front knee bent stance)

                    Kokutsu Dachi                 -             Backward stance.

                  Neko Ashi Dachi               -             Cat stance.

                      Shiko Dachi                    -            Horse riding stance (imagine being sat on a big fat horse).  

                       Kiba Dachi                     -            Same as Shiko Dachi but  with both feet pointing forward.

                    Sanchin Dachi                   -            Rooted ( hour glass) stance (left sanchin - left foot forward).

                    Sokuto Dachi                    -             Foot edge stance. Long stance with foot edge of leading foot forward.

                      Kosa Dachi                    -           Crossed leg stance knee pressed into calf.

                  Suri-Ashi Dachi                 -             One legged crane stance.

                     Moto Dachi                    -              Short Front Stance.
